Death of a Legend

Robert Mondavi, pioneering Napa Valley vintner, died this morning at the age of 94.

It's the end of an era.

If you've got a bottle of Mondavi wine in your cellar, I think tonight would be a good time to drink it. I'll be popping open the 2003 Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon, and raising a glass to this wine legend and all he contributed to American wine culture.

Like many, I had been aware of Mr. Mondavi for years before he signed a copy of his 1998 autobiography, "Harvests of Joy", for me. Reading the book, I feel that I got to know him well. Certainly it would seem that his longevity, at 94 years, was well-served by a life devoted to living well in the company of good wine.

Well, Mr. Mondavi leaves this world a better place - the wine world, anyway - and I shall salute his life tonight with one of his esteemed Napa Valley cabernets.
